Bird bath

Birds like to take a bath, they enjoy the refreshing water. But they do not want to be disturbed by a cat. Therefore, our 4 m long bird bath is situated in the mowed part of the meadow. Bathing birds can see an approaching cat and fly away to a safe place. Around the bird bath is a lot of mud that especially swallows need for making a nest.

Since 1997
Busy bees

An ultimate highlight in our school garden are the fourteen bee hives.

Our students can spend hours in front of them observing the bees swarming and approaching the hive. Most interesting is the display case that provides our students with the great opportunity to observe bees very close through a window. All are very eager to help with honey harvesting, fully covered in beekeeper dresses.

Throughout the following school year the little beekeepers of the Frauenwaldschule gathered a lot of hands-on experience with bees.

 2004
Construction of the rockery

Another awesome biotope in our school garden is the rockery. More than 120 tonnes of basalt and limestone were piled up and decorated with plants that find their ideal habitat in higher mountain regions but flourish also in lowland. The first lizard was already seen after a few weeks.

Since 1995

Maintenance of gardening tools

Regularly, our students clean and maintain the gardening tools after using them in the school garden. Additionally, they help with the thorough cleaning twice a year.

After using the gardening tools they are roughly cleaned with a putty knife and wiped with cloth. In autumn the wooden sticks are sanded and rubbed in linseed oil; the metal parts are also rubbed in oil.

Since 1995
Market on the school grounds

Every year in September our teachers, students and their parents organise a big school market on the school grounds. More than 80 merchants, children, parents, farmers, organic stores, nature conservation organisations and many, many other friends of the Frauenwaldschule sell their products on the market. Lovingly decorated booths offer a huge variety of garden and field products. The school itself sells among other things home-made jam, lavender bags, nesting aids for solitary insects and honey.

Densely packed, the visitors try to snatch the best offers on good terms: delicious oyster mushrooms, potatoes, eggs, onions, home-made sausage, preserved mirabelles and cherries. Even the students of grade 1 successfully offer their home-grown cress.

Every year the school market is a marvelous event for all traders and visitors alike. Some farmers were even inspired to sell their products directly in their own farmyards.

 Since 2005
Webcam in nesting box

Every spring, a webam in one of our nesting boxes for birds gets online and our students impatiently await the first visit of a birdy couple and its children.

The camera is soundless and needs no daylight for the recording since it is an infrared camera. The birds are not disturbed by the camera and show us their natural behaviour. All action in the nesting box can be observed by the students on a screen inside the school building.

All children can see the nesting box on our Homepage  www.frauenwaldschule.de    or    www.schoolgarden.eu
